Hey it's Tarrmu and welcome to another episode of Indie Hour where we talk about the latest independent video games that may have passed you by, and in today's video we're going to be talking about He Is Coming a rogue-like fantasy inspired by the RPG's of old and developed by Chronocle.

He is Coming coming takes place in a fantasy world where you're exploring in what feels like an old-school retro RPG. But that is all to the games aesthetics, because under the hood He is Coming's central loop is focused surviving three nights against an onslaught of different monsters that come in the form of unique bosses. The way in which you do this is by traversing the generated world picking up items, to form the best build possible to survive each sequential night. The combat is simple for He is Coming, the game is an auto-battler meaning that you can watch each encounter play out on its own, at three different speeds.

There are many different items, pickups and points of interest that provide a good variety of decision making, but at the same time require careful consideration with the finite amount of time you have between each day. Even when you fail a run there are a plethora on in-game achievements and milestones that unlock for completing certain goals, and in turn unlocking new items for you in the next run. I've so far sunk a few hours into this game, and each session had me hooked with that feeling of just one more run to get me by. The game has your praying to the RNG gods, but weirdly stappling together builds and learning the games rules in a fairly intuitive manner.

There are currently two maps the Woodlands and the second map being the Swamplands. Now the Woodlands as a first map sets the groundwork for a lot of the core staples and features that underpin the loop. The Swamplands takes this a step further and adds way more uniqueness and makes the map feel it is comprised of this different little islands that you're exploring. It's a great way to crank up the challenge and humble players like myself who were excited after defeating the Woodlands map.

The crazy thing about all this is that the game is still in early access, so there is still content that is being added and updated in the game, so I'd be very interested to see how He is Coming evolves over the months and years to come. If these first two maps are anything to go by, I feel the game has a lot more room to iterate and experiment with. It genuinely impressed me with how the second stage the swamplands iterated and evolved on much of the first level, that it almost feels entirely different and there is so much to unlock for those who have the completionist itch too.

There is even a multiplayer mode as well called Kingmaker where you face off against other players and through victory collect crowns, which are a currency that is used to collect new items. I've only dabbled with this mode, but it is full of charm and it adds extra life to this already replay-able and satisfying experience.

So to wrap up this video, these are my thoughts and impressions with He is Coming, it's still in early access and the game offers a lot of fun, and is one of those games that is a great addition to your library especially your steam deck. It is addictive and super satisfying to play once you get into the a rhythm and have some RNG luck on your side. It's an easy game to return to, and its an easy pick up and play game for the bus ride to work or lounging around the house. He is coming is available on Steam and Xbox Game Pass.
