Indie Hour - Ball x Pit

Introduction

Hey it's Tarrmu and welcome to another episode of Indie Hour where we talk about the latest independent video games that may have passed you by, and in today's video we're going to be talking about Ball x Pit a Bullet-Hell Rogue-like developed by Kenny Sun and Friends.

The Hook

The Hook of Ball x Pit can be summarized in one simple sentence "get balls, balls bounce, balls destroy everything in your path, level up, get more balls". But this simplistic description really doesn't do enough justice to just how addictive the loop of Ball x Pit really is. There is something truly addictive about how it all falls into place, the big numbers the sounds, the vibrant colors it's like a bullet-hell pinball machine where the balls multiply and you're constantly being fed upgrades that tap into that micro-dopamine that keeps us glued to the screen and hooked like a gambler at a poker machine. There are special balls, passive abilities and build-crafting and characters that give you a sense of strategy to how you navigate the chaos, and there is a tight loop of meta-progression that makes failure always feel worthwhile. In a world where you hear rogue-like and eye roll, Ball x Pit is something that is truly an addictive and unique spin on this formula.

The Moment

The Moment where Ball x Pit really clicked for me was sometime into my second run, where I almost beat the final boss of that particular level, and had built my character around specific types of balls that were absolutely melting the enemies prior and I almost had won. It was at that moment, the penny dropped, the realization set in, I was hooked, I then proceeded to drop another two hours into the game after. There is something that is so special and rewarding about Ball x Pit. One moment you're managing this little block of land laying down different buildings that net different benefits like new characters and buff your players, the next you're descending into the dark abyss to try your luck at clearing that particular level.

The Features

The features of Ball x Pit are comprised of two different modes and components that underpin the experience, the first being where you are dropped into a pit where you're ping ponging balls smacking enemies, building out and obtaining you special balls and perks to help you fight both the mini-bosses, and end of the level boss which provides you gears to descend to greater depths, and with that comes more complex enemies, bosses, and terrain hazards, that further expand and call upon you to utilize your balls, and the ways in which you maneuver the pit itself. The special balls that you get as well, are able to be fused or evolved into crazier balls which have even stronger effects, and it makes you constantly want to chase and build the most crazy build possible, to melt through enemies, and as each pit gets more difficult, you can feel the pressure and the tables turn when the pit starts to overwhelm you. It's such a unique feeling.

The second side of Ball x Pit is where the meta-progression lies, and this comes in the form of farm where you plant down different buildings and resource structures which generate materials to build more structures. The way you interact with these structures to both build and salvage on this farm is by shooting all your characters onto a path, like a ball to harvest and build as much as they can in a duration of time. These two elements overlap incredibly well, to make a game of harvesting, building and slowly unlocking new characters, buildings that provide permanent stat buffs, and then there is the pit runs where you're trying to clear each stage with a character, unlock new balls, new gears, and delve deeper into the bottom of the pit.

It's such an addictive loop, that keeps you invested and makes you feel like you're always unlocking something and progressing, and the core loop is an absolute rush every single time, and since the games release there has been additional content with The Regal Update which has added new characters, passives, and balls and there is a new update The Shadow update releasing April 27th.

The Presentation

The Presentation for Ball x Pit is one of the points of this game that I absolutely adore. The art direction for the game has a really vibrant and 2D art style that feels like it is dropped into this hybrid 3D environment, where everything holds the distinct pixel work of the 2D environments but transported into this more 3D environment creating this nice 3D pixel styled models. The continuous numbers, effects when your special balls hit an enemy all contribute to this rush factor that I've previously outlined, and this works incredibly well with the overall sound of the balls, and effects making Ball x Pit feel like the addictive rush that I've outlined. The overall performance is pretty solid, I weirdly did encounter one game crash, but it never did repeat itself in the hours that followed, so I'll write it off as more of a user issue. But it is something that I feel is worth mentioning.

Who This Is For

Ball x Pit is a game that is made for people who love games that are easy to jump into play for 20 minutes or an hour while they talk to mates online and are just chilling. It is a game that I'd liken to something like Megabonk. There is a decent amount of content to soak up, and there is around 20-30 hours of enjoyable gameplay, and characters to unlock, and further longevity for those who want to unlock everything. On top of all of this Ball x Pit as I mentioned previously is constantly receiving updates, and with things like an Endless Mode it becomes an easy game to switch on and kick back to play once you've unlocked everything.

If you're a fan of anything in the rogue-like genre or love games that are easy to boot up and get into, and are okay with getting easily addicted than Ball x Pit is absolutely a game that I recommend.
